The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).
In the Virtual Colloquium session on Thursday, 27.06.2024, at 09:30 a.m. Berlin-time, we will be joined by Gameli Adzaho for a presentation titled “Towards Inclusive Digital Development: Gaps, Solutions, Questions”. The talk will highlight challenges posed by increasing digitalisation of society, and how it may contribute to widening inequity and injustice. It will also showcase some solutions or ideas that seek to address identified challenges. Finally, we will explore lingering questions on the right approaches to building sustainble digital futures.
Gameli Adzaho is passionate about the role of science, technology, and innovation in driving sustainable development. He pursues this passion through his current role with the UK’s Research and Innovation Systems for Africa (RISA) Fund in Ghana, and his track record in STEM education, community building, and volunteering. Gameli and his colleagues created Global Lab Network, a community of students, experts, innovators, and general enthusiasts mobilsed around open science and innovation for social impact. He is an alumnus of the Design Research Lab where he was a Research Fellow of the Weizenbaum Institute in Berlin, Germany with the Critical Maker Culture group.
