The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).
Prof. Dr. Siegfried Zielinski joins us as part of the Virtual Colloquium for an in-person presentation titled “Is Freedom Really Just Another Word For Nothing Left to Lose?” at the Berlin Open Lab on 31.10.2024 at 09:30 a.m. Berlin-time. In the lecture, Prof. Dr. Zielinski will develop a concept of freedom as a lived / designed practice (gelebte / gestaltete Praxis). Freedom only ever exists as a potential space. It goes hand in hand with the idea of sovereignty in the arts. Or, to paraphrase Dalí: artists must serve no one but God.
Siegfried Zielinski is Professor Emeritus of Media Theory at Berlin University of the Arts, Michel Foucault Professor of Media Archaeology & Techno-Culture at the European Graduate School (EGS), honorable Professor and Doctor at Budapest University of Arts, and visiting Professor at Tongji University in Shanghai. He was founding rector (1994–2000) of the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, director of the Vilém Flusser Archive (1998–2016), and rector of the Karlsruhe University of Arts & Design (2016–2018). He has published extensively on Archaeology and Variantology of the Arts and Media. In cooperation with the ZKM Karlsruhe he also worked as a curator. Together with FM Einheit he recently produced critical-poetical sound pieces for MusicAeterna and German radio stations. For the latest project online see: https://raco.cat/index.php/Artnodes.
