The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).
We are joined on this Thursday, 16.01.2025 as part of the Virtual Colloquium by Saba-Nur Cheema, a political scientist, writer as well as an anti-racism trainer. She focuses on topics of Islamophobia, antisemitism, Jewish-Muslim relations, and societies marked by international migration. She is also an advisor to the German Federal Government on Islamophobia.
Saba-Nur started in 2003 as a trainer in the field of historical-political education at the Anne Frank Educational Center. She built up the area of educational programs and projects at the center in 2015 and managed it until 2021. Since May 2022, she has been conducting research as part of the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung’s project “Antisemitism in educational contexts. Religiously coded constructions of difference in early and middle childhood” at the Goethe University. Saba-Nur was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2024 by the German president.
