The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).

For many decades, design has been strongly aligned with stimulating needs and boosting consumption. Today, we look with horror at the environmental destruction, the fragmentation of society and the strengthening of the political fringes as consequences of contemporary capitalism.
This book advocates an understanding of design that focuses on the process in an open-ended and integrative way, is oriented towards collaboration and beyond commercial, profit oriented interests.
In this book, we open up new fields of action for designers and encourage to help shape a more livable environment and society.
With examples from social and eco social design, independent art projects, protest actions and cooperative initiatives, we highlight that design is much more than websites and advertising, editorial and aesthetics. Design can be a powerful tool: in shaping politics and society, the world we live in and the way we live together.
As the book is written in German, the presentation will be in German but the conversation in English, depending on the audience. Join the event!
