The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).
We are joined by Tiara Roxanne on Thursday, June 12th at 9 am on Zoom as part of the Virtual Colloquium for a presentation titled “Data colonialism and Digital Attunement”. During this talk, Dr. Roxanne will present work on data colonialism and how it affects marginalized / Indigenous communities in the Americas, leading us to ask how this is happening around the world. They will also introduce their preliminary work on digital attunement, specifically highlighting how our use of digital technologies are shaping our nervous systems.
Tiara Roxanne is a Purhépecha (descendant) Mestiza scholar and artist. Dr. Roxanne’s work is dedicated to rethinking the ethics of AI through an anti-colonial and cyberfeminist lens. They are currently working toward their book project with University of California Press, forthcoming 2026. Tiara has presented at Images Festival (Toronto), Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center (NY), Trinity Square Video (Toronto), European Media Art Festival (Osnabrück), University of Applied Arts (Vienna), SOAS (London), among many others.
