Virtual Colloquium: Prof. Matt Ward – “A Landscape of Hope: imagination, agency and care”
We are joined by Prof. Matt Ward on this Thursday, June 25th at 9 am Berlin-time for a presentation titled “A Landscape of Hope: imagination, agency and care” as part of the Virtual Colloquium at the Berlin University of the Arts. This lecture will have two key threads; A situated, local history of Critical and Speculative Design (and how hope plays into the culture of education and practice) and a case study of an ongoing collaboration with a small town in North Wales. The first part will examine the changing nature of critique and speculation; its emergence within European design culture, the problems and critiques and its evolving role in the future of design education. The second part will give an overview of ‘The Illegal Town Plan’ a practice-based research project that aims to understand and develop community-based futures for economic and social development.
Matt Ward is Professor of Design at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he has held leadership positions for 20 years. His work engages in a wide range of topics from speculative design to radical pedagogy. He’s a practicing designer and writer whose work searches for meaning in the construction of the extraordinary through the reconfiguration of everyday life. He’s held numerous academic roles across the world, including; Visiting Professor at the Designed Realities Lab at The New School, Academic Advisor at Lasalle School of Art and Design in Singapore and External Examiner at the Royal College of Art.
The session will be held in person at the Berlin University of the Arts on Einsteinufer 43 (10587 Berlin) in room 215 on the second floor.
