The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).
In this week’s session of the Virtual Colloquium we will have Sandra Stark & Joe Lockwood as our guests, their talk is titled “Practicing Curiosity”
What happens when we (have to) expand our capacity for empathy to the more-than-human? How can we learn an ecological sensitivity that includes all living beings? And in what ways can a “Practice of Curiosity” contribute to a more caring world? We use Nature Journaling as a method and an experiment to relate to and learn with plants as active, living beings. In doing so, we explore how this mindset changes the way we think about sustainable futures.
Sandra Stark
Sandra is an artist and researcher. She has a background in design and somatics and uses artistic practices, primarily dance and choreography, to explore embodied ways of knowing, relating, collaborating and being in the world.
Joe Lockwood
Working at the interface of industry, higher-education, policy and civil society – to connect people, places and projects to build alternative solutions – I like to call them Parallel Worlds!
Spaces for collaboratively making ways of organising that deliver a ‘new economy’ – one that renews our relationships between people and planet.
