The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).
In this week’s session of the Virtual Colloquium we will have Gilberto Vieira as our guests, his talk is titled “Data Activism for New Commons in Latin America”
Data Activism for New Commons in Latin America
We will talk about the centrality of data and the symbolic transformation of urban peripheries and favelas in the Global South, especially in Latin America. We are trying to understand how the use of data science influenced a movement of thecnopolitical repositioning of populations stigmatized by poverty in so-called subaltern urbanism.
Gilberto Vieira is a PhD student in Urban Studies at Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná – Brazil and has been researching the centrality of urban Latin America peripheries in the era of data coloniality. He is part of Jararaca (jararaca.org), a research group in urban technopolitics. Gilberto is also co-funder of data_labe (datalabe.org), a data journalism lab in Rio de Janeiro run by young favela’s residents who work by generating, searching, analyzing and visualizing data on gender, race, education, territory and digital rights. In Weizenbaum, Gilberto is a Visiting Researcher in the Diversity and New Commons research group.
