The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).
In this Virtual Colloquium session, Michael Dascal will hold a presentation titled “Building a diverse quantum workforce from the ground up” as the co-founder of the non-profit Diversity in Quantum (DiviQ). Quantum Technologies promise to open the door to new advances in materials science, medicine, AI/ML, climate modeling, and many other areas. DiviQ believes that they simultaneously offer a new opportunity – the chance to create a diverse and equitable ecosystem from the ground up. As part of Michael’s colloquium, he’ll discuss DiviQ’s approach, efforts, and plans, and what else we can do to help.
Michael Dascal is co-founder of DiviQ, a non-profit that exists to support members of underrepresented groups in the quantum ecosystem. He also leads an industry quantum computing research incubator and is responsible for monitoring the quantum ecosystem and exploring collaboration, engagement, and community development opportunities. He has given multiple technical and non-technical talks in quantum computing and quantum information, and is dedicated to promoting an optimistic, but realistic understanding of quantum technologies and the quantum timeline.
Michael’s background includes a combination of industry and academic experience, including a decade in marketing and communications for Fortune 100 brands. He holds a PhD in foundations of quantum mechanics and quantum information, and degrees in philosophy, physics, and linguistics.
The Virtual Colloquium this semester is organized in cooperation with Goethe-Institut’s Studio Quantum. The Zoom link to join the Virtual Colloquium will be the same for all sessions: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82954605489?pwd=VP3XBDzVogeuQtLWaXbWEFpm9ObxiQ.1
