The Design Research Lab is a network of people, organisations, and non-human agents engaged at the intersection of technologies, materials, and social practices. Our aim is to design socially and ecologically sustainable tools, spaces, and knowledge that support people’s participation in a digital society – based on common principles of inclusiveness and respect for the planet. This puts the basic democratic right to take part in the digital sphere into practice. We start our research from individual lifeworlds and the needs of minoritized groups, beyond consumer majorities.
We are an interdisciplinary team of designers, researchers, tech-enthusiasts and critical thinkers from Berlin University of the Arts, German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, as well as Einsteincenter Digital Future (ECDF).
Tiago may best be described as a creative technologist and digital innovator. Born in Lisbon in 1981, he obtained his degree in Computer Science and Engineering at the New University of Lisbon (PT) in 2006 and a PhD in interactive art and game design at the University of Arts and Industrial Design Linz (AT) in 2017.
While conducting practice-based research in Linz, Tiago has also taught programming, physical computing, and play theory to MA students. He is currently based in Berlin, where he has worked as researcher, creative technologist and software engineer.
His skill-set and sensibilities bring together different fields to produce unique outcomes, resulting in a body of work which includes original concepts, applied research and creative approaches in interface design and human-computer interaction.
